Growing up a Desi in America, it’s was always a struggle to connect with our roots and people. Unlike many other minority groups in America who have built long-standing ties and communities within the country, the Desi community has only recently started establishing a cultural and societal foundation in the States. Just ten years ago nobody that wasn’t Desi really knew what butter chicken was or that something like Bollywood even existed. I remember being scared to bring my lunchbox to school because of what kids would say, but now my friends send pictures of them cooking curries I haven’t even heard of. Desi culture is becoming entrenched in the fabric of the States themselves, and our community is becoming stronger and stronger by the moment. From being the top brass at companies to filling stadiums with laughter, there isn’t anything we aren’t doing. Day by day, we are building stronger and stronger community frameworks and cultural organizations across the country. There’s a lot to celebrate and convey to people around us,and that’s the point of all of this. This site is a celebration of all things Desi, be it cool things we’re doing around the world to the latest in pop culture everyone’s talking about. This is a place for all thing Desi run by Desis, and I’m looking forward to celebrating with all of you. Let’s have some fun.
What is the Desi Collective?
The Desi Collective was founded to connect Desis in America to their roots and culture. Our mission is to highlight the evolving presence of Desi culture in the U.S., from food to community frameworks, and invites fellow Desis to celebrate their achievements and create a supportive community. Let’s unite and empower Desis.
